The Meaning of Islam

Islam is derived from the Arabic root "Salema": peace, purity, submission and obedience.
In the religious sense, Islam means “Submission to the good will of God, together with obedience to His beneficial Law.”

[Another literal meaning of the word Islam is 'peace' and this signifies that one can achieve real peace of heart and mind only through submission and obedience to GOD.]
Everything and every phenomenon in the world other than man is administered totally by God-made laws, i.e. they are obedient to God and submissive to his laws, they are in the State of Islam.
Man possesses the qualities of intelligence and choice, thus he is invited to submit to the good will of God and obey His law, i.e. become a Muslim (one who submits to GOD).

In Arabic the prefix "mu" is added to denote the one performing the action or verb and it becomes "mu"-"islam" or "Muslim."

Concept of monotheism in Islam

-God in Islam is a universal god, rather than a local, tribal or parochial.
-There is an uncompromising monotheism at the heart of the Islamic beliefs which distinguishes Islam from other major religions.
-The Quran rejects such ideas as the duality of God arguing that both good and evil generate from God's creative act and assuring that the evil forces have no power to create anything.
-The Quran also rejects the concept of Trinity.

Monotheism (Tawheed) can be divided into three categories.

(‘Tawheed not merely monotheism i.e. belief in one God, but means ‘unification’ i.e. ‘asserting oneness’)

1, Maintaining the unity of Lordship:
-To believe that there is only one Lord for all the universe; its Creator, Organizer, Planner, Sustainer etc.
-GOD alone caused all things to exist when there was nothing. He created or originated all that exists out of nothing. He alone is the sole Creator, Cherisher, and Sustainer of the complete universe and all between it, without any need from it or for it.

2, Maintaining the unity of Allah’s (GOD) name and attributes:
(i) Allah should be referred to as described by Him and His Prophet.
(ii) Allah must be referred to as He has referred to Himself.
(iii) Allah is referred to without giving Him the attributes of His creation.
(iv) God’s creation should not be given any of His attributes
(v) Allah’s name cannot be given to His creatures

3, Maintaining the unity of worship:
Maintaining the unity of worship is the most important aspect of monotheism.
Allah alone deserves worship and He alone can grant benefit to man for his worship.

Thus one True, Unique, Supreme, Almighty GOD, is the only logical concept of God.

Touchstone of Monotheism

1, Say: He is GOD, the One and Only;

2, GOD, the Eternal, Absolute;

(He is beyond the bounds of time and space)

3, He neither begot anyone, nor was he begotten;

4, And there is none comparable unto Him.

(GOD is beyond comparison)
